pada Sabtu, 6 Juni 2009 pukul 06.30 wib –
selesai, dan dipusatkan di Taman
Bungkul Surabaya. Beragam kegiatan
bertema anti udara kotor akan dilaksanakan
dalam rangka kampanye ini, diantaranya jalan
sehat dipadu dengan kampanye damai, aksi
teaterikal, gelar aneka permainan, mural,
lomba poster, lomba komik pendek, lomba
blog, pameran, bagi-bagi tanaman
sanseiviera, pentas musik band dan bagi-bagi
stiker.

Claket,
Mojokerto!

We started the day with a visit to our
second school that will involve in our
project about the environment of the coastal
area, SMPN 15. Here we gave the same
presentations as we gave yesterday at SMPN
31; about global warming, about water
pollution and about the water problem in the
future that we’ll have if we don’t change
our behavior now. To make the kids aware so
they really want to involve in our project.
Next week we’ll come back to learn them
about composting and to learn them about
separating garbage for recycling. (Because
they already have a lot of trees around the
school, tree planting was not necessary).
They’ll also join in the beach cleaning, so
we really need to set up a date therefore.

Trip to

Yesterday Pasquelle and I visited SMPN 15
to present out presentation on global
warming and water pollution. As we had
already given a presentation to SMPN 31; we
have to be fair to SMPN 15. This time Pippin
didn’t tag along. He and Curtis were busy at
the mangrove conservation centre for
mangrove tree planting. Bet they had mud
spa!

Coastal
Project And Mangrove Area

After a free day yesterday we had
regained our energy for a new day. It was
Pippin’s first day at Tunas Hijau, so he
went with us. We first got to SMPN 31
Surabaya, this is one of the schools that
will involve in our project for the coastal
area. So it was the second time Mandy and I
visited this school. Today we gave a
presentation about what global warming
exactly is and we also presented about water
pollution and its effect on human beings
(diseases, infections etc). Roni wanted us
to make the children cry (or: make them
aware of the size of the problem, that it’s
really happening right now and that we have
to do something about it).

Eco Team Building At
SMP 31 Surabaya

This was Pippin first working day at
Tunas Hijau. He came along with us to SMPN
31. He gave a brief introduction of
Australia and we presented our slides on
global warming and water pollution. Dani
gave his own presentation on how the future
in the year 2040 if the environment is
continually neglected by mankind. The kids
were very cooperative and active. They were
very curious. They kept pondering us with
questions. We were glad they are interested.

Sharing About
Australia’s Flora And Fauna at SMP 31
Surabaya And Mangrove Survey

Today was my first day at work for Tunas
Hijau. In the morning Pasquella, Mandy and I
went to a junior high school SMP 31 Surabaya
to give presentations about the environment
in our home countries. There were 40
children in the class of different ages.
I spoke first out of the group, I
discussed Australia's flora and fauna and
showed the class pictures of kangaroos and
koalas. Then I talked about the problems
Australia has had with massive land clearing
and the flow-on effects of this i.e. erosion
and salinity. It can be difficult to gage
how well the message is getting through
because I don't speak Indonesian but I think
Dani was a great translator – you don't get
much opportunity to practice your
environmental vocabulary.

After
everyone took the day off yesterday to catch
up on sleep from the prince and princess of
the environment, we were back at work today.
This week we have a new intern joining us at
Tunas Hijau, he is from Australia and is
named Pippin. My day started off at 8:00 in
the Tunas Hijau office, where I received an
email from the principal of one of the
schools in Canada asking to do the video
conference Wednesday night. Roni sent the
information to SDN Petemon 13 Surabaya and
they were very happy. They requested that I
go to the school to explain what was going
to happen in more detail.

Lingkungan Hidup 2009
 Penganugerahan
Pangeran dan Puteri Lingkungan Hidup telah
menyelesaikan tahap akhir seleksinya. Grand
final yang menjadi penutup semua tahapan
seleksi telah berakhir Minggu (24/5) sore.
Bertempat di lantai 2 Gedung Wanita
Surabaya, Jl. Kalibokor Selatan 1 Surabaya
grand final itu dihelat. Dengan disaksikan
lebih dari 600 orang penonton, 30 orang
finalis pangeran dan puteri lingkungan hidup
2009 menunjukkan bahwa dengan keluguan yang
mereka miliki aksi nyata untuk lingkungan
hidup tetap dilakukan.

Lingkungan Hidup Sekolah-Sekolah Finalis
PangPut LH 2009 Berlangsung Marak
 “Kecil-kecil
cabe rawit, biar kecil kreatifnya amit-amit”.
Istilah ini adalah gambaran dari stan
pameran lingkungan hidup 18 sekolah dasar
asal para Finalis Pangeran dan Puteri
Lingkungan Hidup 2009. Pameran yang digelar
pada Grand Final Penganugerahan Pangeran dan
Puteri Lingkungan Hidup 2009 ini diadakan di
pendopo lantai 2 Gedung Wanita, Jl.
Kalibokor Selatan 1 Surabaya, Minggu
(24/5). Pada pameran ini, tiap stand
menampilkan berbagai karya dari program
lingkungan hidup yang sudah dilakukan di
sekolah masing-masing. Tidak terkecuali
proyek lingkungan hidup masing-masing
finalis.

Prince
and Princess Weekend

Before we got off to the last training day
of the Prince and Princess election, we went
to a school in the morning. They organized a
day full of activities and one part was tree
planting with Tunas Hijau. Before we did the
tree planting we were invited to the opening
ceremony of the day. A girl in traditional
clothing did a beautiful traditional dance
of which I can’t remember the name anymore.
But it was greet to look at
J!
The trees we had to plant were small ones,
which can grow without much sunlight and
water, so they’re ideal to plant under other
bigger trees. So this is what we did.

The Waiting Moment Has
Arrived!

At last the day everyone has been working
their ass off has arrived. Dani fetched us
to the hall which is located in the city.
When we arrived there are exhibition of
products produced from used material. There
are 18 exhibition booths from the school of
the ‘Prince and Princess’ finalists. All
showed different creativity of products but
some were very outstanding. Curtis,
Pasquelle, and I were the judges for the
exhibition. We judged the school based of
their dedication, creativity, design and
quality, the usage of material, and content.

Tree
Planting At SMA 11 Surabaya

Before I tell about my day today I would
love to talk about last night’s dinner. We
had some quality time with the mayor and his
wife. Dani drove us to ‘Singapore of
Surabaya’. Singapore of Surabaya was
constructed based on the theme Singapore.
Everything we made to look like Singapore;
from the landscape to the statues and water
fountains. Pasquelle and I had dinner in a
luxurious restaurant. The interior of the
restaurant is very Surabaya and very nature
like; with lots of trees, flowers, and nice
landscape of water.

Wanita, Jl. Kalibokor Selatan 1 Surabaya
Puncak
penganugerahan pangeran dan puteri
lingkungan hidup 2009 akan dilaksakan besok,
Minggu, 24 April 2009. Bertempat di lt. 2
Gedung Wanita, Jl. Kalibokor Selatan 1
Surabaya, puncak acara ini akan diikuti oleh
sekitar 1000 orang penonton atau pengunjung.
Para penonton tidak hanya akan mendapat
suguhan aneka atraksi unjuk kebolehan para
siswa dari beberapa sekolah dasar peserta.
Suguhan yel-yel pendukung (supporter)
masing-masing finalis juga akan menjadi daya
tarik sendiri. Ini karena tidak sedikit
sekolah yang akan mengenakan dandanan unik
pada para pendukungnya. Penghargaan yel-yel
pendukung terbaik disediakan Tunas Hijau.

Pada Finalis PangPut LH 2009
Penilaian
terakhir pada para finalis pangeran dan
puteri lingkungan hidup 2009 akan
dilaksanakan di grand final besok, Minggu 24
Mei 2009. Pada penilaian tahap paling akhir
ini, para finalis diminta untuk menjawab
pertanyaan yang telah disiapkan Tunas Hijau.
Pertanyaan yang akan disampaikan adalah
tentang isu global lingkungan hidup saat ini
seperti pemanasan global dan rusaknya
lapisan ozon. Ada juga isu lokal lingkungan
hidup seperti pengolahan sampah. Kebijakan
pemerintah kota Surabaya tentang Satu Jiwa
Satu Pohon (Sajisapo) juga menjadi tema yang
akan diujikan.

Tree
Planting And Visiting Water Filtration

 Today
was an early day, I left my host family’s
house at 6.00 am, and we had to be at to the
SMP 12 to help plant trees. Dani and I
picked up Mandy and Pasquelle at their house
at 6.30 and left for SMP 12 Surabaya which
took over 1 hour to get to because it is in
West Surabaya. At SMP 12 we were going to
help with one of the green activities that
they planned which was, tree planting. We
meet the students and divided into three
groups, each group was asked to plant at
least three trees. It was fun being able to
do some physical labour and to work outside.
My group ended up planting 12 trees. They
were very enthusiastic about the planting
which is nice to see and hopefully they can
plant more trees around their homes.

Tree Planting Involvement

 Today
is another fruitful day for me. I really
love the activities we had. We visited a
senior high school which was situated quite
far away from the city. We departed early at
6.30 am because the journey took us an hour
to reach the school for ‘tree planting’
activity, harvesting of ‘semanggi’ which is
a traditional Surabaya vegetable (it looks
exactly like four-leaf-clover), and
releasing of catfish into a few ponds. All

PangPut LH 2009 Berbagi Pengalaman Dengan
Wakil Konjen Amerika Serikat
 Hari
kedua, Jumat (22/5), sesi pagi pelaksanaan
karantina atau 3 hari pembekalan lingkungan
hidup finalis pangeran dan puteri lingkungan
hidup 2009 diisi dengan berbagi pengalaman
dengan Wakil Konsul Jenderal Amerika Serikat
Jeffrey Loree. Bertempat di pendopo Taman
Flora Bratang Surabaya dan beralaskan ular
tangga tema perubahan iklim ukuran 6 x 6
meter, sesi dengan Jeffrey ini berlangsung
sangat informal dan penuh kekeluargaan.

Permainan Tradisional dan Pengenalan
Reptilia di Sesi Sore Karantina
Masih ingat
dengan permainan bekel? Atau permainan
loncat karet atau loncat tali? Bagaimana
dengan dakon dan engkle? Hari pertama sesi
karantina, Kamis (21/5) sore, para finalis
pangeran dan puteri lingkungan hidup 2009
diajak melakukan beberapa permainan
tradisional. Ada bekel yang menggunakan bola
elastis. Ada dakon yang memindahkan
biji-bijian dari lubang-lubang yang
disediakan. Ada loncat tali yang menggunakan
karet gelang yang disambung-sambung. Ada
juga permainan ular tangga peduli lingkungan
hidup.

Finalis PangPut LH
Belajar Pengomposan di Rumah Kompos Bratang
 Setelah
mengikuti sesi pengenalan kondisi lahan
pembuangan akhir sampah warga Kota Surabaya
di Benowo, para finalis Pangeran dan Puteri
Lingkungan Hidup 2009 diajak untuk mengenal
pengolahan sampah organik skala komunal,
Kamis (21/5). Sesi pengolahan sampah skala
komunal ini dilaksanakan di bagian selatan
Kebun Bibit Bratang, tepatnya Rumah Kompos
Bratang Surabaya. Di rumah kompos yang
berukuran sekitar 200 meter persegi ini para
finalis dapat menyaksikan belasan gunungan
sampah organik yang sedang dalam proses
pengomposan, mesin pencacah, mesin pengayak,
dan tumpukan sampah organik yang masih baru.

Sampah Benowo
 Sampah
selalu dihasilkan setiap orang dimanapun
berada, tidak terkecuali orang Surabaya.
Sampah bisa pula menjadi masalah bagi setiap
orang. Mengenalkan masalah sampah tidak
harus dengan pelajaran di dalam ruangan
ber-AC. Pengenalan itu tentunya lebih
mengena dengan peninjauan lapangan ke
tempat-tempat yang bernuansa sampah. Seperti
yang dilakukan para finalis Pangeran dan
Puteri Lingkungan Hidup 2009 menandai hari
pertama karantina, Kamis (21/5).

We started our day at one of the parks in
Surabaya. Here the finalists of the “Prince
and Princes award” already gathered, because
the next few days the grand finals will be
held. Today they got some trainings about
the environment and activities you could do,

Malang
to Pacet

The journey from Malang to Pacet was
something that cannot be forgotten easily.
The memories are to be cherished always. The
journey from Malang to Pacet started at my
host family where I was getting ready and
packed my dresses. The journey was long and
the view by the roadside was good, so I did
not get sleepy. We stopped in between to buy
some batteries and petrol but continued our
journey after that.

Dwi Hartono. Pada pembekalan yang diberikan
di ruang sidang wali kota Surabaya ini,
Bambang Dwi Hartono menyampaikan fenomena
lingkungan hidup Kota Surabaya. Disampaikan
wali kota yang peduli lingkungan hidup ini,
bahwa masih banyak warga Surabaya
berperilaku buruk terhadap lingkungan hidup.

Making The First Steps

Surprised That The Kids Are Very Responsive

 Today
we visited SMPN 15 and SMPN 31 Surabaya
which is situated nearby the beach. SMPN 31
is populated majority by the Madura who
speaks Java language and the Madura people
are quite aggressive in nature so we have to
be very careful not to provoke them. Java
language is very different from Indonesian
language. I learnt a few such as ‘matur
nuwun’ which means thank you and ‘nuwun sewu’
which means excuse me. If you would to
translate directly....

Doing My
First Activities Today

 So
today was my second day at Tunas Hijau.
Mandy and I have to make a plan for our
project that we want to do at the schools in
the beach areas. So Roni gave us a book with
lots of cool activities in it for children
in which they can learn something about the
environment. We looked through the book and
we found some nice activities that we can
do. By example making a ‘worm castle’. Worms
can eat your left over garbage, turning it
into rich soil which can be used in the
garden.

Meeting
With The Principal of SDK Kristus Raja For
The Next Programs

Mandy, Pasquelle and I visited 2 schools.
Since the trip was with the two girls we got
to use the car again. The first of the two
schools was the elementary school SDK
Kristus Raja. At the school I talked with
the headmaster about the activities I have
planned to do with them. The second school
we visited was SDN Kaliasin I Surabaya,
Mandy, Pasquelle and I discussed with the
students of the 5th grade a bit
about our countries and the state of the
environment in our countries.

Star of The Day

we got up 15 minutes early to be on time
before Dani fetched Pasquelle and I. We
headed to Tunas Hijau office as usual.
Pasquelle and I discussed on the activities
we intended to do with the kids in the
schools we are in charge of. Our events
today were similar as yesterday. We visited
two schools. The 1st school is
SDK Kristus Raja. At Kristus Raja we were
served with some ‘kerupuk’. Pasquelle and I
were taken to a classroom.

The Green School Santa Theresia and SMP 37
Surabaya

 So
today was my first day for Tunas Hijau!
After a short introduction at the office,
Mandy and I were going with Curtis, so we
could see what we are going to do. We went
to elementary school Santa Theresia I, this
is already a ‘green’ school. So this means
they are really teaching the children how to
reduce global warming, reduce garbage and
doing recycling and stuff. By example they
make their own recycle paper and use it for
sketching or writing.

Preparing Carbon Footprint Conference With
the Students of SMP 37

we were a large group with Bram, Danny,
Mandy, the new intern from Malaysia,
Pasquelle, the new intern from the
Netherlands and I visiting the schools. We
visited SDK Santa Theresia 1 and the
children of grade 5 and grade 6 showed us
how to make recycled paper from news paper
we also visited SMP Negeri 37 Surabaya where
I presented on the Carbon Footprint
conference to the organising committee.

Interested With Recycle Paper And Kenjeran

18th May 2009, is the first
day of our involvement with Tunas Hijau. We
got up early and prepared ourselves for the
activities. Dani fetched us at our homestay
which is the mayor’s house. However we were
15 minutes late because we were following
the Indonesian time. Our friends in aiesec
said Indonesians are usually 30 minutes late
but Dani was on time. Well same goes for the
Malaysian.

Ketentuan Pameran Lingkungan Hidup,
Pemilihan Suporter Terbaik dan Yel-Yel
Terbaik Pada Grand Final PangPut Lingkungan
Hidup 2009
Beberapa
hari lagi, tahapan seleksi penganugerahan
pangeran dan puteri lingkungan hidup 2009
akan berakhir. Pada tahap akhir seleksi
program ini, 30 orang yang telah dinyatakan
sebagai finalis diharuskan mengikuti
karantina atau 3 hari pembekalan lingkungan
hidup dilanjutkan dengan grand final.
Karantina akan dilaksanakan Kamis – Sabtu,
21 – 23 Mei 2009 dengan menginap di Taman
Flora (Kebun Bibit) Bratang Surabaya.
Jadwal
karantina dapat didownload. Sementara
itu pada grand final yang akan dilaksanakan
Minggu, 24 Mei 2009, Tunas Hijau tidak hanya
akan menentukan pangeran dan puteri
lingkungan hidup 2009 dan beberapa
finalisnya. Tunas Hijau juga akan memilih
supporter terbaik, stan pameran terbaik dan
yel-yel terbaik.

Pasquelle, Gadis Belanda Magang Bekerja 2
Bulan di Tunas Hijau Untuk Program
Lingkungan Hidup
 Untuk
menuju Surabaya, gadis ini harus menempuh
perjalanan pesawat selama 16 jam. Perbedaan
waktu yang ada antara Surabaya dan negara
asalnya juga terpaut antara 7 – 8 jam. Ini
karena gadis yang telah menyelesaikan kuliah
S1 jurusan Farmasi University of
Twente, Enschede, ini berasal dari
Belanda di benua Eropa. Namanya Pasquelle
van der Jagt atau biasa dipanggil Pasquelle
atau Pas. Dia akan dua bulan bersama Tunas
Hijau untuk melakukan pembinaan lingkungan
hidup di sekolah-sekolah dan masyarakat
sekitar.

tenaga baru di markas Tunas Hijau Surabaya.
Dia gadis kelahiran tahun 1987 dan masih
mahasiswa. Uniknya, gadis ini bukan
berkewarganegaraan Indonesia. Gadis ini
tidak pula sudah lama berada di Surabaya
atau kota lain di Indonesia. Gadis ini baru
datang dari negaranya, Malaysia, karena
memang dia adalah warga negara Malaysia.
Namanya Mandy Lim Pei Mun atau biasa
dipanggil Mandy. Dia datang khusus ke
Surabaya untuk menjadi aktivis Tunas Hijau –
kids & young people do actions for a
better earth atau lembaga lingkungan
hidup yang menjadikan anak-anak dan generasi
muda sebagai pelaku perubahan lingkungan
hidup.

Planting in SMA 11 Surabaya And Filming
Surabaya’s Mayor

 Today,
I went to SMA 11 for the tree planting
activity and I met with the mayor of
Surabaya. We left the Tunas Hijau office at
around 7:15 and arrived at the school around
8:30. Tree planting is the first green
activity that the senior high school has
planned, they will be doing more activities
in the upcoming weeks. For the tree planting
activity each class was responsible to bring
a tree to be planted. I was able to hep dig
the holes and plant a couple of the trees.

Tanam Pohon di Hutan

Negeri 11 Surabaya nampak membawa bibit
pohon mangga dengan diameter batang sekitar
4 cm. Begitu aktivis Tunas Hijau berdatangan
di sekolah di kawasan Manukan Surabaya Barat
itu, Yoe One pun nampak menunjukkan dengan
bangga pohon mangga yang dibawanya. “Ini
adalah pohon mangga kedua yang saya bawa
hari ini. Pohon pertama sudah saya tanam 30
menit lalu. Tapi, pohon ini bukan milik
kelasku, melainkan milikku pribadi,” kata Yoe One
kepada Curtis dan 3 orang aktivis Tunas
Hijau lainnya.

Hidup 2009
Ada
informasi tentang hadiah bagi Pangeran dan
Puteri Lingkungan Hidup 2009 yang perlu
dikoreksi dari pengumuman yang ditulis
online sejak April 2009. Di pengumuman
itu masih disebutkan bahwa hadiah bagi
setiap finalis adalah tropi dan selempang
finalis. Sesuai pengumuman yang disampaikan
online, 13 Mei 2009 tentang
Ketentuan Karantina Atau Pembekalan Tiga
Hari Finalis Pangeran dan Puteri Lingkungan
Hidup 2009, telah kami nyatakan bahwa
hadiah bagi finalis hanya tropi Wali Kota
Surabaya dan piagam penghargaan.

Karantina, Finalis Diharuskan Membawa Jas
Hujan dan Tas Kresek Besar
Ada masukan
yang bagus dari beberapa guru dan orang tua
menyikapi tulisan tentang
Ketentuan Karantina Atau Pembekalan Tiga
Hari Finalis Pangeran dan Puteri Lingkungan
Hidup 2009 yang dimuat 13 Mei 2009 di
website
www.tunashijau.org. Masukan yang
diberikan menyikapi salah satu dampak
perubahan iklim yang juga dirasakan di Kota
Surabaya. Yaitu hujan yang bisa
sewaktu-waktu datang dan mengganggu
pelaksanaan karantina atau 3 hari pembekalan
finalis pangeran dan puteri lingkungan hidup
2009. Masukan itu adalah tambahan barang
yang harus dibawa finalis, yaitu jas hujan
dan tas kresek besar untuk antisipasi hujan.
Sementara itu hal-hal lain masih sama
seperti ketentuan sebelumnya.

Today, I prepared five different
activities for SDK Santa Theresia I Surabaya
and presented them to the principal of the
school. The school has one more year left of
in the environmental school program.
Therefore, it is important for them to
educate the schools around them of the
projects they have been doing and prepare
another school to get selected for the
environmental school program. The five
events I will be doing with the school are,
bicycle awareness, recycled paper workshop,
a school exhibition, reseeding and splicing
activity and carbon footprint workshop for
the teachers.

24 Mei 2009
Puncak penganugerahan pangeran dan puteri
lingkungan hidup 2009 bakal digelar pada
Minggu, 24 Mei 2009 di Gedung Wanita Jl.
Kalibokor Surabaya. Meskipun masih kurang
satu minggu lagi, namun sudah ada 8
(delapan) sekolah yang akan meramaikan grand
final pangeran puteri tersebut. Kemungkinan
acara ini bakal dimeriahkan lebih dari 9
(sembilan) sekolah sangatlah besar,
mengingat masih banyak sekolah finalis yang
belum mendaftarkan diri terlibat dalam acara
tersebut.

what they do with their organic waste. Roni
helped translate the questions into
Indonesian for me. We interviewed three
families and asked them the following
questions, the amount of people living in
their house, did they buy or cook most of
their food, what they did with their
leftovers and would they be interested in
composting.

Water Monitoring With
Students of Al Muslim’s Junior High School

 Today,
I visited Al Muslim’s junior high school
with Ronnie, Bram and Harshid. The junior
high school is located in front of their
elementary school. I gave a presentation on
the water monitoring kit explaining how the
difference tests affect the water and its
environment. The presentation was in front
of about 15 students from the 7th
and 8th grades. A few of the
grade nine students listened for a little
while but than they had to go a test.
Harshid gave a brief presentation on
reforestation and its importance with
respect to the environment.

Ketentuan Karantina
Atau Pembekalan Tiga Hari Finalis Pangeran
dan Puteri Lingkungan Hidup 2009
Program
Penganugerahan Pageran dan Puteri Lingkungan
Hidup 2009 telah memasuki tahapan akhir
seleksi. Tiga puluh orang atau lima belas
pasang finalis akan memasuki masa karantina
atau pembekalan 3 hari tentang lingkungan
hidup. Karantina akan dilaksanakan di Taman
Flora atau Kebun Bibit Bratang Surabaya,
yang juga tempat pelaksanaan seleksi-seleksi
sebelumnya. Karantina akan dilaksanakan
Kamis – Minggu, 21-23 Mei 2009. Selama
karantina itu para finalis diharuskan
menginap dalam beberapa tenda terpisah
laki-laki dan perempuan yang disediakan
Tunas Hijau. Sementara jadwal akan
disampaikan secara online di website
ini pada Jumat, 15 Mei 2009.

Sharing Environmental Issue With The
Students SMA 11 Surabaya

Today, Harshid, I, Roni and Bram went SMA 11
senior high school. Harhsid and I once again
gave presentations on our respective
countries and the effects global warming is
having on our countries. We were also taken
on tour of the school by the students and
shown their various green areas. They also
discussed how they plan to continue to
promote respecting the environment at their
school and abroad.

Sharing
Global Warming Effects
In India

Bram Azzaino and Aditya Firmansyah came to
pick Curtis and me today at Mr Andre’s
house. It was raining heavily before we left
so we had to put on our raincoats. We
proceeded for the long journey. Taking about
an hour, we reached the school without any
further delay. The school was full of trees
which gave it a cool atmosphere. We were
welcomed by a cool breeze which I believe
might have been because of the presence of
the trees around.

Yang Lolos Seleksi Tahap III
Seleksi Tahap
III yang berisi debat lingkungan hidup dan
interview telah dilaksanakan Sabtu (9/4) di
Taman Flora Bratang Surabaya. Seusai
pelaksanaan seleksi tersebut, panitia dan
juri pangeran dan puteri lingkungan hidup
2009 mengadakan rapat penentuan yang
berlangsung cukup alot pada Minggu (10/4) di
markas Tunas Hijau. Rapat yang berlangsung
beberapa jam itu untuk merumuskan perlu atau
tidaknya pelaksanaan seleksi tahap IV yang
rencananya dilaksanakan akhir Minggu ini.

In Front of Students

Global
Warming Issue in Canada

 Today,
I visited SMA 12 in West Surabaya with Roni,
Bram and Harshid George from Banglore,
India. It took about an hour and half of
motor bike ride to reach the senior high
school. The high school has a lot of
property at 7.4 acres (3 hectare), which has
good potential for planting trees and other
plants. The school has their own rice field
located beside the school and they share the
rice with the people surrounding the schools
property. The school also sells the compost
it produces, 3000 rupiah buys you 1 kg of
compost. I think that it is very good idea
for any school to make money buy selling
their compost and produce like SMA 12.

Interview Prince & Princess of Environment
And Surabaya Festival

 This
weekend was an eventful one with the third
round of selections for the prince and
princess of the environment on Saturday and
a parade in the cultural festivities on
Sunday. Saturday started off with a little
bit of rain but became sunny again just time
for the prince and princess process. I did
the registration for both the morning and
the afternoon sessions. The morning session
started at 8:15 and there were 36 students
registered. The students were split into 12
teams each containing three students. The
teams were then asked to sit in front of the
group and each of the students than
discussed one of the picture we should them
about the environment. The afternoon
session started around 12:00 and also had
twelve teams. Doing registration was nice
because I got to practise my little bit of
Indonesian with the children.

Orator, Peserta Seleksi Pangput LH Berdebat
Permasalahan Lingkungan Hidup
 Seleksi
tahap III pangeran dan puteri lingkungan
hidup 2009, Sabtu (9/5) pagi, diikuti oleh
62 (enam puluh dua) peserta. Dari 72 peserta
yang dinyatakan lolos, 10 peserta dinyatakan
didiskualifikasi. Pelaksanaan seleksi tahap
III tersebut dilaksanakan dalam dua
gelombang. Gelombang I dilaksanakan pukul
08.00 – 11.00 wib. Gelombang II dilaksanakan
pukul 12.00 – 15.00 wib. Pada seleksi tahap
III ini peserta melakukan debat lingkungan
hidup dan wawancara atau interview.

III Pangput Kaget Penggunaan Bahasa Inggris
Panitia “Canada”
 Ada
yang berbeda dari pelaksanaan seleksi tahap
III Pangeran dan Putri Lingkungan Hidup
2009, Sabtu (9/5). Perbedaan ini nampak saat
pendaftaran ulang peserta seleksi. Seperti
tahapan seleksi sebelumnya, setiap peserta
diminta mengisi daftar hadir dengan
membubuhkan tanda tangan pada form daftar
hadir yang telah disediakan Tunas Hijau.
Namun, berbeda dengan sebelumnya, bahasa
pengantar yang diberikan panitia Tunas Hijau
pada daftar ulang ini adalah bahasa Inggris.
Ini karena panitia pendaftaran ulang seleksi
III ini adalah Curtis Deschambault, pemuda
Canada yang dua bulan bekerja di Tunas Hijau
dan tidak mengerti bahasa Indonesia.

Harvesting in SDK Kristus Raja And Water
Monitoring

 Today,
I learnt how to do water testing with the
water testing kit here at Tunas Hijau. The
testing kit tests the turbidity, the pH
level and the oxygen level of the water. We
tested three different water sources around
Tunas Hijau, two of which produced similar
results. The turbidity of the tests were all
the same at 40 JTU. Turbidity of the water
indicates how clear the water is, clearer
water does not mean clean water. In the same
way that very turbid water maybe clean. Some
the reasons for water to become turbid is if
there is a lot of bottom feeding fish or if
there is soil erosion that is occurring near
the water supply.

Fernanda and Vincent
with Biological Control using Trichogramma
Japonicum as an Egg Parasite Who Won
International Young Scientist Conference in
Poland

 Fernanda
and Vincetius are grade 8 students in SMP
Christian Petra 3 Surabaya and won gold
metal at the national science fair in
Jakarta. Their research into the effects of
Trichogramma Japonica in rice fields lead
them to be one of the ten selected to go to
Pszczyna, Poland for the young scientist
conference. The conference in Poland was a
six day event hosting 39 teams from 18
different countries.
Their trip to Poland started off first with
the advice of their teacher Mr Gunawan.
He was the person who suggested to them that
they could observe rice plants. More
specifically why some of the plants die and
others do not when no pesticide is applied.
At the beginning the learnt from some of the
local farmers that the plants that did not
die contained trichogramma japonicum. They
then continued to observe the rice fields
for about 8 months and learnt how
trichogramma japonicum prevented the plants
from contracting the parasites, which would
kill them.

Banana Leaves in SDK Theresia I and Rubbish
Clean Up In SMP 20

 Today we visited two schools, SDK Santa
Theresia I (primary) and SMP 20 (secondary)
Surabaya, the schools contrasted each other
because the first school has been working
with Tunas Hijau for seven years and the
other school has just started working with
Tunas Hijau. SDK Santa Theresia I had
already implemented different environmental
friendly activities. For example, the school
uses banana leaves as containers and for
their meals from the canteen. They then
dispose of the organic waste into the
compost buckets. The compost that they
produce is used as fertilizer for the plants
around their school and in the green house.
The children are also making recycled paper
out of the used paper they collect.

Bersih-Bersih dan
Sosialisasi Sampah di SMPN 20 Surabaya
Dua orang
siswa laki-laki SMP Negeri 20 Surabaya
nampak mengeluarkan semua bagian dari
keranjang komposter yang dimiliki sekolah.
Tidak lama kemudian, kardus pembatas, dua
bantalan sekam yang berbeda ukuran, kain
hitam, pengaduk dan kompos yang sudah jadi
tertata di luar keranjang itu. Peragaan ini
adalah bagian dari sosialisasi cara
penggunaan keranjang komposter yang
dilakukan Tunas Hijau pada perwakilan siswa
SMP Negeri 20 Surabaya, Kamis (7/5).
Sosialisasi yang dilaksanakan di aula
sekolah itu disaksikan Curtis Deschambault,
pemuda Canada yang dua bulan beraktivitas di
Tunas Hijau.

Visiting
SDN Petemon 13, SMP 37 and SD Al Muslim
 The
first school visited was SDN Petemon 13
Surabaya, which is a public elementary
school. The children showed me the art they
made with recycled material which was very
nice to see. The school has the students
bring their own cups and plates for the
drinking water and for their lunch, which is
very environmentally friendly. They are also
composting the organic garbage they make,
which they use to fertilise the plants they
have planted around the school.

Sosialisasi Sekolah Peduli dan Berbudaya
Lingkungan Hidup Pada Para Guru SMP Negeri
37 Surabaya
Guntomo,
salah satu guru SMP Negeri 37 Surabaya,
menceritakan hasil kunjungannya dengan
beberapa guru di SMP Negeri 1 Sukodono
Lumajang beberapa minggu lalu. Kunjungan di
salah satu sekolah Adiwiyata Nasional itu
banyak memberikan kesan baginya dan beberapa
guru yang ikut serta. Menurut Guntomo
sekolah yang luasnya sekitar 2 hektar itu
sangat bersih dan hijau. “Kebersihan yang
tercipta di SMP Negeri 1 Sukodono Lumajang
itu bukan hasil kerja petugas kebersihan
saja. Namun, kebersihan di sekolah itu hasil
kerja sama semua elemen warga sekolah, yaitu
pimpinan sekolah, guru pengajar, para siswa,
petugas kebersihan, komite dan juga orang
tua,” kata Guntomo.

II

Mekanisme Seleksi Tahap III Pangput LH 2009
Sejumlah 72
peserta penganugerahan pangeran dan putri
lingkungan hidup dinyatakan lolos seleksi
tahap kedua. 72 orang yang terdiri dari 36
peserta putra dan 36 peserta putri itu
diharuskan mengikuti seleksi tahap ketiga
yang akan digelar Sabtu, 9 Mei 2009.
Tempat pelaksanaannya masih sama dengan
seleksi tahap sebelumnya, yaitu di pendopo
Kebun Bibit (Taman Flora) Bratang Surabaya.
Pelaksanaannya akan dibagi menjadi dua
gelombang. Gelombang I akan dilaksanakan
Sabtu, 9 Mei 2009 pukul 08.00 – 11.30 wib.
Gelombang II akan dilaksanakan Sabtu, 9 Mei
2009 pukul 12.00 – 15.30 wib.

Pemuda Canada Yang Dua Bulan Bersama Tunas
Hijau Membina Lingkungan Hidup di
Sekolah-Sekolah
 Sejak
Selasa (5/5) siang, ada wajah baru di markas
Tunas Hijau Surabaya. Dia masih muda,
berumur kurang dari 23 tahun. Dia bukan
orang Surabaya. Dia bukan orang Madura atau
pulau lain di Indonesia. Warna kulitnya
layaknya seorang bule atau orang dari
luar negeri, karena memang dia berasal dari
negeri seberang yang sangat jauh. Untuk
mencapai Surabaya, dia harus menempuh
perjalanan yang sangat lama. Lebih dari 20
jam perjalanan dengan pesawat dia tempuh.
Namanya Curtis Deschambault. Dia berasal
dari Kota Montreal, Canada.

2009 SDN Dr. Sutomo VI Surabaya Memakai Tas
Daur Ulang Pada Seleksi Tahap II
 Pemandangan
unik nampak diantara para peserta seleksi
tahap kedua pangeran dan putri lingkungan
hidup 2009, Sabtu (2/5). Pemandangan yang
dimaksud adalah belasan siswa dari satu
sekolah yang mengenakan tas daur ulang.
Bahan tasnya bukan dari kertas bekas atau
kertas daur ulang yang sudah pasti tidak
awet. Bukan pula dari daun pisang yang sudah
pasti setelah 3 minggu akan hancur. Tidak
pula bahannya dari plastik seperti layaknya
kresek atau kantong plastik, yang
sudah pasti akan rusak paling banyak dalam

Daur Ulang Kertas di Lokasi Seleksi Pangput

 Seleksi
tahap II pangeran dan putri lingkungan hidup
2009 sudah selesai dilaksanakan, Sabtu
(2/5). Dari pelaksanaan program yang sudah
dimulai Tunas Hijau sejak
tahun 2002 tersebut menyisakan beberapa
kejadian unik. Salah satunya adalah workshop
daur ulang kertas yang digelar oleh peserta
dari SDN Dr. Soetomo VIII Surabaya. Daur
ulang kertas bekas menjadi kertas baru
sengaja dilakukan di lokasi seleksi oleh
peserta dari SDN Dr. Soetomo VIII Surabaya.
Ini untuk menyiapkan bahan untuk membuat
media kampanye proyek lingkungan hidup.

Orang Tua Peserta Pangput LH 2009 Yang Luar
Biasa
Seleksi
pangeran dan putri lingkungan hidup (pangput)
tahap kedua yang diselenggarakan Sabtu
(2/5), menjadi lebih ramai dari pelaksanaan
seleksi tahap pertama. Kemeriahan ini bukan
hanya karena seluruh peserta yang berjumlah
127 orang yang hadir ke lokasi seleksi di
Kebun Bibit Bratang Surabaya. Kemeriahan ini
juga karena para orang tua peserta seleksi
pangput yang hadir meramaikan suasana
seleksi tersebut.

SD At Taqwa Kampanye Dengan Pakaian Adat
 Sesi
kampanye proyek lingkungan pada seleksi
tahapan kedua penganugerahan pangeran dan
puteri lingkungan hidup, Sabtu (2/5),
dijadikan momentum untuk mengenalkan proyek
yang dilaksanakan sebagian besar peserta.
Berbagai trik dilakukan untuk mengundang
perhatian sebanyak mungkin pengunjung Kebun
Bibit Bratang Surabaya. Ada yang berkampanye
sendirian atau juga berkampanye berkelompok,
artinya bergantian menjelaskan proyek
masing-masing dari peserta satu sekolah.

 Dengan
sabar Givari Perwira Zikrian menggoreskan
crayon warna miliknya di atas kertas putih
ukuran A3 (30 x 40 cm) untuk media kampanye
proyek lingkungan hidupnya yang berjudul
“Pemanfaatan Kardus Bekas Menjadi Kotak Tisu”.
Siswa kelas IV SDN Kaliasin I tersebut
merupakan salah satu peserta penganugerahan
pangeran dan puteri lingkungan hidup yang
diselenggarakan Tunas Hijau.

hidup ini merupakan seleksi tahap kedua yang
digelar di pendopo Kebun Bibit (Taman Flora)

Delapan
Mural Lingkungan Hidup Dibuat Para Siswa dan
Orang Tua SDK Kristus Raja Surabaya
 Ada
yang berbeda di salah satu sudut lahan
parkir barat Galaxy Mall Surabaya Sabtu
(2/5) pagi itu. Delapan lembar kain putih
polos berukuran sama, 1,5 x 3,8 meter,
nampak digelar di bawah pepohonan Angsana
yang ada. Tidak lama kemudian anak-anak
berpakaian olah raga SDK Kristus Raja
Surabaya menghampiri lembaran kain-kain
tersebut sambil membawa beberapa gelas bekas
yang berisi cat aneka warna. Kedua orang tua
masing-masing nampak menyertai para siswa SD
itu sambil membawa beberapa batang kuas
aneka ukuran. Sesaat kemudian aneka goresan
mulai nampak pada delapan lembaran kain
putih itu.

Kampanye Proyek Lingkungan Hidup
 Seleksi
tahap kedua pangeran dan putri lingkungan hidup
2009 akan dilaksanakan satu hari saja, yaitu
Sabtu, 2 Mei 2009. Hanya peserta
seleksi yang telah dinyatakan
lolos seleksi
tahap pertama yang boleh mengikuti seleksi tahap
kedua. Seleksi kedua ini juga
digelar di pendopo Kebun Bibit (Taman Flora)
Bratang Surabaya. Berbeda dengan seleksi
tahap I yang dilaksanakan dua gelombang,
seleksi tahap II hanya akan diselenggarakan
satu gelombang atau satu hari saja. Yaitu mulai pukul 08.00
wib dengan waktu yang disediakan maksimal 6
(enam) jam.
Pada tahapan
seleksi kedua, peserta akan mengikuti tes
tulis pengetahuan lingkungan hidup dan tes
pembuatan media ....
